Although funded almost entirely by taxes levied on or real property, our locally elected board of education in Fairfield is not an agent of the town but, in fact, creature of the state.
Chapter 170 of the state General Statutes establishes the laws creating the board of education. The specific duties of the board of education are outlined in section 10.220. The board is not an agent for the superintendent of schools nor should it be an advocacy group for the superintendent’s agenda. The superintendent works for the board and not the other way around as too often seems to go in this town.
With regard to the latest brouhaha between the electorate and Fairfield’s elected board of education, the board should be reminded of item “b” of its duties designated in 10.220: The board of education of each local or regional school district shall, with the participation of parents, students, school administrators, teachers, citizens, local elected officials and any other individuals or groups such board shall deem appropriate, prepare a statement of educational goals for such local or regional school district.
The statement of goals shall be consistent with state-wide goals pursuant to subsection “c” of section 10-4. Each local or regional board of education shall develop student objectives which relate directly to the statement of educational goals prepared pursuant to this subsection and which identify specific expectations for students in terms of skills, knowledge and competence.
And the board needs to be reminded of item “e,” which goes on to state: Each local and regional board of education shall establish a school district curriculum committee. The committee shall recommend, develop, review and approve all curriculum for the local or regional school district.
I think it is quite fair to say that the current electees on the Board of Education are not doing the job they are required to do by state law. Exactly why that is the case is a bit of a mystery to me but no matter. Many of these electees are up for re-election next November. If they do not shape up, that will be the perfect opportunity to hand them their pink slip no matter what political party they may belong to.

This corrupt, self indulgent organization has been out of control for more than a decade
In cahoots with an endless line of overpaid superintendents who are incapable of operating efficiency, the Fairfield BOE caters to the tired old “more money means better education” nonsense” that parents have been terrorized into believing year after year after year.
Come budget time its the SAME OLD EXCUSE for failure to manage. “We’ve cut to the bone” (one of now departed “fat” annie’s favorites)while loading up on teaching assistants and assistants for assistants and expensive, unused techno – junk like white boards, endless retreats, conferences, etc etc etc.
Get a responsible, conservative town government and weed out this waste
